Strategic Analysis of Market Trends for the Snack Brand Cornae

Patch Notes 0.2.1

As part of a technical assessment, I conducted a strategic analysis of the Thai snack market using retail sales data from 2018 and 2019. The objective was to uncover actionable insights and growth opportunities for the popular extruded snack brand, Cornae. This case study demonstrates a practical approach to transforming raw sales data into a clear business strategy.

Cornae is Outperforming a Slow-Growth Market

My initial analysis revealed a compelling findings. As I compare the growth of the overall market and the extruded market that Cornae is in, I found that Cornae's growth went a little bit beyond. That means Cornae is in the no-so-attractive market, but performing quite well in its own category.

We can get a confirmation from this chart that Cornae is very trusted and popular among the other extruded brands.

Identifying "White Space" Growth Opportunities

From the category comparison, the biggest share in the market is in the potato chip category.

This presents Cornae with a strategic choice:

  1. Compete: Develop a new product to enter the large, highly competitive "Potato Chip" arena.
  2. Innovate: Capitalize on the high-growth trend by launching a product in the "Nuts" category, potentially leveraging its brand trust to capture market share quickly.

A carefully considered R&D plan, focused on one of these "white spaces," could allow Cornae to serve new customer needs and create a new revenue stream.

Leveraging Predictable Seasonality

A time-series analysis of the monthly sales data revealed a strong and highly predictable seasonal pattern. Sales for Cornae consistently peak during festive and holiday periods such as Songkran and New Year.

This predictability is highly actionable and allows for strategic planning in three key areas:

  • Inventory Management: Proactively increasing stock levels before these peak months to prevent stock-outs.
  • Marketing Optimization: Concentrating advertising budgets and promotional campaigns in the periods leading up to these holidays, or come up with the new campaign for a lower sales periods to maximize return on investment.
  • Product Innovation: Introducing special "festive packs" or "party-size" versions of products to align with the consumption habits of these holiday periods.

Summary

This project underscores the power of data to look past the surface. While Cornae's top-line growth appears healthy, a deeper analysis reveals both a strategic threat in its slow-moving category and a clear opportunity in market seasonality. For any business, the ability to translate these layers of data into a forward-looking strategy is the key to navigating a competitive landscape.
